Roadmap to the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies
Every Environmental Studies major builds a strong foundation in environmental science, ecology, sustainability, and environmental policy. Through research, field experiences, and other hands-on learning opportunities, you’ll strengthen your critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills while exploring practical solutions to today’s environmental challenges.
Year One
Our First-Year Experience gives you the freedom to discover what you care about most and find a path to get there. Your coursework this year allows you to build a strong foundation in scientific inquiry, data analysis, and interdisciplinary learning. You also begin asking meaningful questions about how communities, ecosystems, and public policy shape our world.
Year Two
In your second year, you will have a stronger vision of what your academic experience and career planning look like. Your integrated advising team of faculty, career counselors, and mentors will ensure that the things you study align with your future goals while still providing room to explore.
Year Three
Your third year includes a required full-time co-op. For one semester, you earn credit while applying knowledge from your coursework in a professional setting.
Year Four
Your last year is not the finish line. It is where everything starts. Complete your Senior Seminar, apply what you’ve learned through original research or field experiences, and graduate ready to make an impact in your community and beyond.

When I first came to Hendrix, I was uncertain of the direction I wanted to take for my future career. However, I carried a deep passion for the natural world and its preservation. Through the Environmental Studies program, I was able to explore a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from STEM to philosophy. Through this interdisciplinary program, I found that my vocation lies in sustainable agriculture and volunteer-based projects.
