Student Activities

Thrive Via Hendrix
Hendrix students stay active long after lectures and labs are over for the day. Student activities keep students’ calendars full with events and programs for the whole community.

New Student Orientation
When new students move in, Orientation (OR) week begins. It’s an exciting (and exhausting) week that gets first-year students ready for life at Hendrix.
From awesome trips and entertaining awareness programs, OR is one of the highlights of the Hendrix experience. Meet your academic advisor and make friends across campus at events. OR rolls straight into Welcome Week, ending with Shirttails, a dance competition between all first-year students living in the residence halls and a long-standing Hendrix tradition.

Campus Traditions
Spend a little time at Hendrix, and you’ll quickly learn that some things here have a language all their own.
Campus Kitty, for example, has nothing to do with cats. It’s a student-led tradition that has brought the Hendrix community together for fun, friendly competition, and fundraising for local charities for more than 65 years.
Then there’s Shirttails, Hendrix’s oldest student tradition. For more than a century, students have gathered each fall for a spirited residence hall dance competition. The tradition has changed a bit since it began as a spontaneous celebration following a Hendrix football victory, but the signature look has stuck around: tennis shoes, shorts or boxers, a white long-sleeve Oxford shirt, and a tie.
And if it’s your birthday? You’ll find out pretty quickly that Hendrix has a tradition for that, too.
That’s just the beginning. Stick around long enough and you’ll hear about the elusive cafeteria disco tray, Robots, Ghost Roast, SoCo 54, Miss Hendrix, Toga, and plenty of other traditions that make Hendrix feel like home.
Some will make sense right away. Others? You’ll just have to experience them for yourself.
